Most trades know they should be asking for reviews. The bit that trips people up is the wording, it can feel like begging if you get it wrong. Here’s exact wording that doesn’t.

The best moment to ask

Right after you’ve finished and they’ve seen the result, while they’re pleased and it’s fresh. A text the same evening works nearly as well. A message three weeks later asking for a review on a job they’ve half forgotten about rarely lands.

A text you can send as-is

“Thanks for having me round, glad you’re happy with it. If you’ve got a minute, a quick Google review would really help the business, here’s the link: [your review link]. No bother if not, just appreciate the work.”

Asking in person

“If you’re happy with it, a Google review would mean a lot, it’s how most new customers find me. I can send you the link now if that’s easier.” Then send it there and then, while they’re still standing in the finished room.

Why the direct link matters

Asking someone to “find us on Google and leave a review” is more friction than it sounds. Most people who say yes never actually do it, because it takes three or four steps to find the right page. A direct link that opens straight to the review box removes nearly all of that friction.

If they don’t reply

One follow up, a few days later, is fine: “No rush at all, just bumping this in case it got buried.” After that, leave it. Chasing past that point tends to annoy more than it converts.

What not to do

  • Don’t offer money or discounts for reviews, it breaks Google’s rules and can get reviews removed
  • Don’t ask before the job’s actually finished and approved
  • Don’t send the same generic message to everyone with no personal touch at all

Quick answers

What’s the single biggest thing that gets more reviews?

Sending a direct link to the review box, not just asking someone to find you on Google.

Is it okay to offer a discount for a review?

No, Google’s rules don’t allow paying for or incentivising reviews, and it can get reviews removed if reported.

How soon after the job should I ask?

Same day if possible, or that evening by text. The longer you wait, the less likely it happens.
